Portal | mixed media by Niki van Buuren

2003 Canberra firestorm survivor Niki van Buuren is set to hold her debut visual art exhibition Portal at Strathnairn Homestead from the 25th July. The exhibition in the homestead’s Gallery One will feature a series of mixed media and alcohol ink works.
Portal explores themes of nature spirituality and ancient folklore and was born of a fascination with pre-Christian sacred sites such as standing stones and burial mounds. van Buuren, a practicing neo-pagan, says of her work: Portal is inspired in part by the Aboriginal songline tradition where myth is intertwined with knowledge of, and love for, the land. The series is an exploration of our ancient connection to the world around us; examining what we have lost through the advent of modern western society and how we can reclaim the forgotten knowledge of our ancestors.”
