Threadology

5 February - 2 March

Homestead Gallery 1

Threadology explores the intersection of the natural environment and the digital world through the medium of textile and punch-needle pieces. This exhibition features sculptural works that interpret nature while simultaneously reflecting the repetitive patterns found within data. Through the juxtaposition of organic motifs and digital aesthetics, the exhibition aims to provoke thought on the interconnectedness and contrasts between the natural and digital.

As technologies further mimic the patterns or behaviours found in nature, they often fail to capture the complexity inherent in these ecological systems. Threadology creates a dialogue between the tactile and the virtual, the organic and the algorithmic. Each piece serves as a woven narrative, capturing the essence of nature through the lens of data visualization - illustrating the ways in which the natural and digital worlds inform and enhance each other.

Artist bio

Claire Osman is a fibre artist, working at the intersection of art and design. The exploration of fibre and textile art began during her design studies at Whitehouse Institute of Design, where Claire experimented with seaweed as a material – creating a series of homewares and woven pieces from treated seaweed. Since that time, Claire has continued to explore textile fibres, craft practices and natural materials.

Currently based in Canberra, Claire is focused on creating work with wool. Texture and dimension play a key role in her work, promoting physical exploration with the world around us.

Claire’s practice not only explores methods and materials, but underscores the critical role that art can play in environmental education and activism. By visualizing ecological processes, it seeks to bring prominence to the pervasiveness of nature in all fields.
