Space Between is an exhibition that exposes different ways of thinking and making through the use of similar materials. David Jensz and Wendy Teakel are significant local artists who began exhibiting together in the late 1970s. As their individual practices forged ahead from the 1980s, 2-person exhibitions fell into abeyance and it wasn’t until the 2000s that this practice resurfaced. Space Between is only the third such event since 2007.

While each artist’s modes of making are overtly clear, the use of the same materials offers immediate and easy relationships between the two bodies of work. The presence of connections simultaneously with differences underscores the artists’ sophisticated intellectual and aesthetic journeys and offers viewers unlimited possibilities for creative understanding and interpretation.

David Jensz’s seductive objects lead viewers into both the artist’s journey and their own. Wendy Teakel’s interrogations of place allied with her interest in rural and cultural landscapes, proffers a different road but one also shared with the artist.

Space Between highlights two artists at the top of their game. Their mature and informed aesthetics are not only sophisticated and engrained with a full understanding of materials and form, they are visually and intellectually embracing and exciting.
