Interdependence | LIZ COATS
Lines, colour, abstraction and unseen pressure.
Strings of luminous colour form groups and zones that create contemplative fields that immerse the viewer in a new exhibition, Interdependence, by Liz Coats at Utopia Art Sydney in August
“These paintings at first appear calm and gentle, but just under the surface there is a sense of movement, an underlying force, that has formed the lines and geometry we see” says Christopher Hodges, executive director Utopia Art Sydney. ”Each work makes us think about what is unseen, the structures of our world, art and life, how things connect.”
"The paintings shift, they close in on themselves, then open out. Liz's small blocks of colour form into patterns, creates lines, inject a punctuation mark of a white and then shift zones of linear pattern across the canvas.
“The more you look, the more the paintings begin to change. There is an energy and movement inside each work that Liz captures in her surfaces.
"Only an artist who’s spent years thinking about colour and form could create the energy and the impact of these paintings.
“Perhaps it’s a city at night, a slice of rock, or surface cracking under pressure, our society, our own individual lives; so much emerges from the pleasure of looking and thinking about these new works.”
“The geometry of life is worked out in these paintings” Hodges concluded.
