Mandy Martin (1952 – 2021). A Tribute.
29 JULY - 22 AUGUST AT STRATHNAIRN ARTS | GALLERY 1
On 10 July Mandy Martin, one of Australia’s foremost artists, lost her battle with cancer. Mandy had a long connection with Canberra, moving here from Adelaide in 1978 to take up a teaching position in the Printmaking Workshop at the (then) Canberra School of Art. She remained at the School until 2003, and maintained a role with the ANU through her position as Adjunct Professor with the Fenner School of Environment and Society.
Mandy’s exhibition career spanned more than forty years and she held major exhibitions in Canberra at the Nolan Gallery, the ANU Drill Hall Gallery, the Canberra Museum and Gallery, the Ben Grady Gallery and Beaver Galleries. Perhaps her most memorable presence in Canberra is Red Ochre Cove, a very large painting (2.85 x 12.1 m), commissioned in 1987 by the Parliament House Construction Authority to occupy pride of place in the House of Representatives Main Committee Room in the new Parliament House.
Mandy’s career was a stellar one with as well as having her work represented in major Australian collections and numerous Australian and international corporate and private collections, she has work in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
This exhibition selected from a private ACT collection is a small sample of the work of this major artist whose legacy will remain a testament to her place in Australia’s art history.
