Having recently moved into one of our studios we sat down for a chat and a look around Sally Black’s new studio space. Sally Black is a full-time visual artist in Canberra, producing works on paper with water-based mediums such as watercolour and ink.

Here’s Sally’s take on her practice, studio, The Arts and thoughts for other artists…

Introducing new Studio Holder Solomon Karmel-Shann - a 24-year-old figurative painter who aims to create open narratives through his depictions of people and objects. He is interested in encouraging viewers to engage with his work by giving them hints of a story but not spelling it out to them. Solomon grew up in Canberra and started creating art in 2014 at the age of 17.

Strathnairn Arts Studio Holder Liz Coats is an abstract painter who has exhibited in solo and group shows since the mid-1970s. She works in series' that explore enduring questions about colour perception and spatial relations. Read on for a little insight into Liz’s day to day studio life and ethos behind her work.

Originally from the UK, Ashley Cullen moved to Canberra to pursue her love of art at the Australian National University. Her portraits chart an intensely personal vision of the human experience, capturing people at their most raw and vulnerable moments. We asked Ashley some questions to get a view behind the scenes of her Arts Practice and what goes into an exhibition.

Belconnen Artists Network (BeAN), is a diverse, enthusiastic and skilled group of 10 artists based in the Belconnen region. BeAN artists represent a wide range of artistic skills and techniques including sculptures in both wood and metal, glass, encaustic, textiles, oil and acrylic paintings, drawings and mixed media, computer graphics and photography. Most are long term artists with their own individual, local and regional following.
