Jennifer Baird is a full time Canberran artist. Working across the mediums of painting, collage, lino and screen printing. She moved to Canberra, from Sydney 10 years ago. She enjoys the four beautiful Canberra seasons, Winter being her favourite. Her work has reflected a move towards landscapes, from her well known seascapes. With that, her work has seen a change in colour palette, from blue and turquoise to the olives and browns of the Canberran landscape. A move towards a minimal style has developed, reflected in her recent oil paintings using a palette knife. Jennifer has also reignited her passion for screen printing through Megalo Print Studios.
During the last 10 years she began to explore the James Turrell Skyspace, ‘Within Without’.
This exhibition, ‘Reflected Light’, pays homage to this monumental artwork in the forecourt of the NGA. Through collage she has explored the ephemera of the work. The constantly changing light, shadows, reflections, sounds and shapes, through the seasons. Using found papers and collage Jennifer has constructed 12 works expressing her love for ‘Within Without’. Her collages also express a minimal style with limited lines and colours to convey the simplicity of the Skyspace. Which in its simplicity is also a very complicated work.
Her award winning lino prints have celebrated Canberra’s Modernist architecture and perhaps those simple shapes have influenced her work in this exhibition.
