ANNIE PARNELL | CLAY IS LIKE STONE, GLAZE IS LIKE A ROCK

STRATHNAIRN ARTS ANITA MCINTYRE (EASS)* CERAMICS AWARD 2019

Annie Parnell is an emerging visual artist based in Canberra, graduating from her Bachelor of Visual Arts (Ceramics) in 2020. Annie is now a Studio Holder at Strathnairn Arts. She lives and works on unceded Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri land. Through deviation from traditional processes and using ceramic and other materials, her work explores the potential of a feminist visual language.

Artist statement:

Clay is like stone, glaze is like a rock is a body of sculptural work which is the result of ongoing ceramic material experiments. These material experiments deviate from traditional processes in the hope of finding new systems of building form. Traditional ceramics practice favours skill, control and the expected outcome over chance, however, when chance is embraced in the making process interesting results can arise.

The firing process catalyses interactions between glaze and clay. Thick glaze either warps, broaches or is contained by the clay structures it comes into contact with. The resulting forms are evidence of and reliant on these unplanned chance based transformations.

can glaze embody abjection?

can glaze simultaneously threaten and reinforce structure?

is glaze a catalyst?
